The 10 Top Ways To Play It Safe This Holiday Season

Every year, the holiday season seems to approach us before we’re ready for it. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, approximately 67,800 home fires occur in a typical year, caused from faulty home wiring and electrical appliances. More home fires happen in December than any other month of the year.

The holidays are a busy time for all of us, and safety planning may take a back seat to the list of things to do such as shopping, party organization, family get-togethers, volunteer missions, gift wrapping, and decorating, to name a few. Let’s all work together to make sure our loved ones don’t show up as a statistic on the evening news.

Here are the 10 top ways to play it safe this holiday season:

Overall home wiring system integrity is crucial. Grounded circuits are safer than ungrounded circuits. Have your panel inspected regularly. This could uncover potential problems before they become unsafe.

  • Space Heaters can be very dangerous! When using them, do not overload the circuit they’re plugged in to. Only use space heaters that have an emergency shut-off if they tip over. Make sure the heater itself is not damaged or compromised in any way. Keep children away from space heaters. Keep space heaters away from all combustible materials such as curtains, rugs, furniture, toys, etc. Never leave then unattended, and particularly when your home is unoccupied. Never use them with extension cords. If you believe the heater is even slightly damaged or compromised, throw it away.
  • Your homes’ heating system should be checked yearly by your heating and cooling company. This could uncover potential problems before they become unsafe.
  • Extension cords are for temporary use. Many fires are started by extension cords because they are used improperly, tied in knots, overloaded, stowed under rugs and carpet, used for circuit wiring, frayed or cracked or otherwise compromised. The temporary use rule also holds true for devices used to plug multiple appliances into a receptacle. These are sometimes called ‘triple taps’. These devices encourage overloading. A safer alternative is the circuit breaker protected outlet strip, or a surge protector strip.
  • Smoke detectors are not negotiable! New codes call for one in every bedroom, and one at every elevation change. It isn’t uncommon to find 10-15 smoke detectors in new homes. Regardless of how many you have, make sure you test them regularly (minimum once a month) to confirm they work. They save lives. Ideally, they should be electric with battery back-up, and interconnected. This way when one is triggered, they all sound the alarm. If you’re unsure about your smoke alarm system, have your electrician evaluate.
  • Additional lighting and appliances can overload your home wiring circuits. Follow the rules above for extension cords and triple taps, and apply common sense to your electrical needs overall. If you have repeated fuses blowing or breakers tripping, there could be an overload issue. Be aware of unusual noises such as crackling or popping, and turn all electrical loads off before plugging in or unplugging. This will eliminate arcing.
  • GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) protection is designed to protect human beings from electrocution. Today’s code requires them near swimming pools and hot tubs, in bathrooms, kitchens and outdoors, in garages, unfinished basements and crawl spaces, wet bars, boathouses, rooftop receptacles, fountains, and construction sites. If you don’t have them in these places, speak with your electrician about installing them. During the holiday season of Christmas lights and outdoor electric displays and decorations, to help prevent electric shock it is essential you use GFCI protection for all of your outdoor electrical needs. You can plug into a GFCI receptacle, a circuit with a GFCI breaker, or a GFCI whip (inline GFCI protection).
  • Receptacle safety plugs are a great idea (all year round) when kids are present in your home. They should fit snugly and require some effort to remove, because they could also become a choking hazard. These will prevent children from inserting anything into the receptacle; thereby reducing the chances of electrocution. I also recommend teaching your children from an early age about the rules of electrical safety.
  • Proper outdoor lighting improves security. Motion lighting and floodlighting can provide safer pathways, and aid in home security against prowlers or would-be burglars. It’s a good idea to leave on a light indoors when the home is unoccupied. Timers are useful for cycling lamps and other lighting throughout your home.
  • Ladders are often used to install Christmas lights on homes and trees. Never exceed the load capacity of your ladder. Extension ladders should be placed so that the distance at the bottom is about ¼ the length of the ladder. Keep all areas at the top and bottom of your ladder clear of debris, ice and snow, toys, etc. Keep your ladders free of all slip hazards and materials. Never overextend your reach. Always use fiberglass ladders when working around electrical lines. Never use a ladder for a purpose for which it is not intended.
  • Many folks are do-it-yourselfers. When working with home wiring, remember to ALWAYS turn power off before performing your project. Respect your skill set limitations, and don’t allow distractions. If you feel unsure of your ability in any area of home repair or improvement, hire a professional. Don’t risk your safety, your family or your life to save a few dollars.

There are many topics we can discuss that contribute to the safety of your family and home. Common sense and good judgment in the areas listed above will drastically increase your safety, and improve your odds for an enjoyable, accident-free holiday season.

To Be A Great American Poet

What does it mean to be a great American poet? The phrase (great American poet / great American novelist) has often confused me. Part because it is said so casually, without explanation. Which makes me think, have I missed something? Because I do need some type of explanation.

Does the title strictly sole to the writer's nationality? Or does the content of the work have to portray "American-ness?" Or both?

But what does it mean to be American? Maybe that is the part that confounds me so.

In Grammar Girl's 101 Troublesome Words You'll Master in No Time, Mignon Fogarty states:

"American is the only single word we have to refer to 'a citizen of the United States of America' (USican?), But technically, an American is 'any-one who lives in North America, Central America, or South America' "(P 14).

Fogarty suggests we continue to use the term since no other one exists, ending the section with "feel free to feel guilty" and urging us to follow in the very "American" tradition of taking what does not belong to us.

Goodreads.com created a list that named 100 of the great American novels. According to that list, out of 100 titles only 10 of the authors were female and only 4 authors were not Caucasian. More inadvertently, 3 of those authors were African American and 1 was Hispanic.

From this, I take it that whatever it is that justifies the label "Great American" comes from a generally Caucasian, male perspective.

My inquiry of this phrase started when, at a party, someone asked me what I was currently working on. I related that I had just started working on a novel, and received in response, what I expected to be a joke, "Is it going to be the next great American novel?"

Now, I automatically thought, No. Duh. For one thing, I am a Hispanic female writer, a point of view that is very much alive in my work. And more specifically, I am writing about the Dominican-American lifestyle of a young woman from the South Bronx. I do not see myself fitting anywhere within Goodreads' top 100 list.

But then I thought about the question again and was confused by it and disturbed by my own response. What did the person mean when he asked that question? My idea of what is American and his idea of what is American is most likely very different. But what makes my definition any less valid than his? Furthermore, why did I automatically think that my definition was less valid? Why was I so scared to ask the questioner (a Caucasian male) to explain himself?

These questions are attached once more when I attended an event at The New School. The New School hosted a reading with John Ashbery who read from his book Quick Question. The poem was introduced by Robert Polito who once or twice called the guest reader a great American poet.

Furthermore, Polito introduced the ASHLAB project:

"An ongoing sequence of classes that involves a digital mapping of John Ashbery's Hudson, NY house via his work – and the reverse: a digital mapping of his work through that Hudson house. Students work on various projects – annotating objects in the house, such As paintings, curios, architecture, and mementos; anthropologizing and annotating poems according to various subjects and themes, such as music or childhood; and eliminating and mapping routes through both the house and the work, Ashbery's poetry as well as his prose … How is it possible, this course requests, to archive and map the interiors of (arguably) America's most important and influential living poet, John Ashbery? "

So I was immediately excited to hear the poet read and see if I can discern what makes his poetry so "great American."

Overall, Ashbery's poetry is beautify complex, but I did not get a sense of "American-ness" until I heard the following words:

"Somewhere in America, there is a naked person. Somewhere in America, adoring legions, blush in the sunset, crimson matter and matter still. Somewhere in America, someone is trying to figure out how to pay for this, bouncing a ball off a Wooden strut Somewhere in America, the lonely enchanted eye each other on a bus. It goes down Woodrow Wilson Avenue Somewhere in America, it says 'You must die. You know too much.' "

Without a doubt, Ashbery produces lovely lines that portray America's sense of everyday life from a sort of cynical point of view. But I still think that America is too broad a term to be used confidently. It scares me to see writers using it in a way that automatically excludes other cultures and experiences. I can only ever speak of my America.

My America is Dominican superintendents singing badly to Juan Luis Guerra as the paint the halls. My America is tired mothers coming home from their 9 to 5's with bags full of groceries in each hand. My America is being in college and looking at your classmates, wondering if they think you're only there because of affirmative action. My America is crowded train rides and coffee shops.

Are the great American poets my great American poets? Or the great American poets of others?

Maybe we should work towards expanding the definition of America, move away from the traditional and recognize that it means something different to everyone. Is not that the point of America, this melting pot of a country?

The End Is Near, and So Is a New Beginning

We're getting closer to the end of our church year. In fact, next Sunday is Reign of Christ Sunday, which is the church's equivalent to New Year's Eve. As we draw closer to the end of the church year, our Gospel readings begin to emphasize the signs of Christ's Second Coming. In fact, Jesus talks about some of these signs in Mark 13: 1-8, which we heard a few minutes ago.

In a sermon often called the Olivet Discourse (because it was delivered on the Mount of Olives), Jesus gave the disciples and us a look into the future. The sermon spoke to both the destruction of the temple by the Romans in 70 AD and the destruction to come when Christ returns. Jesus' sermon focused attention on preparedness, readiness to suffer, and trust. Jesus began his description of the events to come by emphasizing that many people will claim to be Him. All of them will deceive the people. As the time of Christ's return draws near, wars and rumors of wars will escalate in number or intensity or both. These conflicts will involve both nation states and ethnic groups. Natural disasters will gain more worldwide attention.

One of the signs Jesus talks about is the destruction of the temple, and he uses that sign to describe what things will be like on earth as the Second Coming draws closer. Many of the stones in the temple were the same weight as a large jet. When the disciples commented on the size of the stones, they were reasonably expecting a messianic takeover of the temple. They were looking forward to a life of power and prestige. Unfortunately, they still did not realize the true nature of Christ's kingdom.

The destruction of the temple was the result of its misuse by its leaders. The sacrificial system of the temple could not make sufficient atonement for the sinfulness of mankind. The disciples could not believe that one of the architectural wonders of the world had lost the grandeur of the spirit. Jesus' conversation about the destruction of the temple was symbolic of the systems and institutions that oppress and exclude people. He was talking about the end of the status quo and the beginning of justice, freedom, and the redistribution and / or redefinition of power and wealth.

When our world is falling apart, God is not through with us-not by a long shot! Jesus reminds us not to create treasures here on earth. We must create treasures in heaven. Things that we think are permanent in our lives are only temporary. Material goods are temporary. They can be taken away. Our journey through life is short. We are travelers passing through. Our true home is in heaven and our true wealth is in knowing Jesus' love and care for each of us.

The false teachers represent the religious culture that results from man's search for spiritual meaning outside of God's world and word. Man's self-interest often leads to social upheavals. Natural disasters often occurs when the ecological system is upset by things such as pollution. These signs are constantly happening, so Jesus told the disciples not to see them as signs of final judgment. He told then that these signs are precursors to the end-time wrath.

Jesus expects his disciples to be the first people to counter false prophets, condemn war and show reconciliation to the victims of natural disasters. False prophets arise in every war, cult or natural disaster. If we ignore what they teach, they will not survive. The main reason why false teachers can thrive is because of our secular society. People do what they please, and they have no time or place for God. All we have to do is look at our congregations on Sunday mornings to see that this is true. People make time for other activities on Sunday but they do not make time for God. People want to do what they please, and God makes that uncomfortable. They try to gain satisfaction from earthly things such as possessions, status, position or wealth, but the only thing that gives us true satisfaction is faith in God.

When Jesus referred to the pains of childbirth, he was referring to the frequency of the signs of the end time. When a woman is in labor, her contractions are infrequent at first and become more frequent as the baby comes closer to entering the world. In the same way the signs of the end times will be infrequent at first but will escalate to massive and tragic proportions just before Christ's return.

God's answer to trouble is trust. He wants us to trust him in times of trouble, especially as the Second Coming draw closer. Faith is the link between heaven and earth. This world is a place where our faith will be refined and where our hope will rest on our future heavenly home-one that will never perish or be destroyed. God is up to stuff that is beyond our ability to understand. Our job is to be alert for it.

This passage from Mark's Gospel was not meant to make us worry about the future. It was written to offer comfort to first century believers who were struggling to make sense of their world and their lives. We have the same struggles, so this passage gives us comfort as well. A prophet speaks both to their own generation and to future generations. When Jesus spoke to the disciples about the destruction of the temple, the problems leading up to that day and of the signs that the terrible day was upon them, he was speaking to both their generation and ours. We live in the interim between Christ's ascension and his return, and in this interim we will experience the same circumstances that Jesus promoted his disciples. We will experience false prophecies, wars and rumors of wars, natural disasters and persecution.

Jesus reminded the disciples that buildings are only stones and bricks. What really matters is what goes on inside. Life-giving waters are splashed and stories from the Bible are told-stories that are meant to give us guidance while we are on our faith journey. A simple meal of bread and wine is given to all of us, and we gather together to bring all of our joys and concerns and thanksgivings to God.

The destruction of the temple was not the end. It was the beginning. It was not about dismantling God. It was about new beginnings in faith. A building may be destroyed, but the place where God dwells can not be destroyed because God lives in Jesus and his word as well as in the hearts and minds of all believers. The future of this congregation is a good example of what I'm talking about. I know that you have had many challenges during the last few years, and you have had discussions about your future. It is my hope that you can take comfort in the knowledge that although your physical makeup may be changing, your spiritual makeup will remain the same, especially if God lives in your hearts and minds.

Our hope is in Christ's return, which will be the main event of the end times. We must be careful not to be deceived by world events. Instead, we must look forward to the greatest event in history-Christ's return for his church!

Is There a Silver Shortage?

Maybe you have heard the commentators on radio or television talking about gold and silver as a hedge against inflation. Both metals have been used as money and as a store of wealth for over 6,000 years, but did you know that silver has some very rare qualities. Silver is one of the most interesting metals, if not the most interesting metal. Most people do not know it, but silver is necessary for most of the electronics, solar panels, batteries, medical devices, and antibacterial applications today.

It's important to note that silver is a precious metal due to its rarity, but it is also used as an industrial metal as listed above. What makes silver so, so very special is that at the rate it is being used now it will be gone by 2020. Does that sound crazy? If so, that is a statement taken from the USGS (United States Geological Society).

Gold is a precious metal as well, but gold only acts as a store of wealth. It is used very little in industrial applications. So, what makes silver such a great investment what what I have talked about? Well, silver is only about $ 16 / ounce right now! That is an absolute steal considering that historically it has taken about 15 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold. Right now that ratio is at about 70 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold. So, the ratio is way out of whack and must go lower.

Many experts state that the silver to gold ratio should be about 10: 1. In other words, there should be about 10 ounces of silver in the ground for every one ounce of gold. The ratio is now 70: 1, and it is only kept this way by market manipulators. Once the manipulation ends, silver will skyrocket. What's more, the amount of silver being used for industry has been increasing year after year due to the demand for electronics. China, India, and other nations who are industrializing are putting a huge demand on the already over stretched silver market.

Many economists believe that silver should now be around $ 100 / ounce. Future price predictions by some experts put silver at $ 500 and even $ 1,000 per ounce. Those predictions are on a mid term basis of about 3-5 years out. If you are an investor and you want to maintain your wealth during a historical period of inflation, or you would like to profit from the silver market, now is your chance.

The public is kept out of the dark when it comes to the short situation in silver. Most people who were called crazy 10 years ago for saying to buy silver are now being praised for it. After all, in the year 2,000 the silver price was around $ 4.00, and is now about $ 16.00. That's a nice return, but it is nothing compared to what's in store!

The Top 9 Sales Mistakes You Need to Stop Making

The world of business is changing, and people in the sales field need to adapt to keep up. Customers are getting savvier and the snake-oil, infomercial-inspired pitches from the days of yore do not work as well any more. Here are nine mistakes you and your sales team need to stop making immediately.

1. Talking too much about the offer, and not enough about the problem.

You have to understand that people buy your product or service only because it fulfills a need or solves a certain problem in their lives. Some sales people spend a lot of time talking about the benefits of the product or the discount they're offering. This makes for bloated, uninteresting presentations that leave customers exasperated.

Solution: Make a list of the most pressing problems your customer is facing, and make your presentation about the ways in which your product solves those problems.

2. Focusing too much on the glamor and visual details of the presentation.

Having a good looking presentation is great. But too many sales people get so obsessed with every little aesthetic detail of their presentation that they forget about the content. In any sales presentation, being an active, engaging presenter is as important as the presentation itself. Situations may arise on the fly where you have to tweak your approach to respond to the behavior of the parties who will be influential in closing the sale.

Solution: Understand who the influencers are in any room you are conducting a presentation in, and calibrate the tone of your presentation to impress them.

3. Skirting around the uncomfortable questions.

Most relationships are built around being honest with each other, even if that honesty creates uncomfortable situations. Sales is no different. If you are trying to maneuver your way around direct, honest questions, you will not generate a lot of trust in your clients. If you do not get answers to direct questions, you might come away from a failed sale not knowing why things went wrong.

Solution: Do not be afraid to ask your clients questions like "Do you think this price will work for you?" Egypt "Why do you think choosing our product over the competition would be a good decision?"

4. Delivering a presentation without having a clear target.

Whenever you deliver a presentation, you must know exactly what it is you want your client to do as a result of listening to your pitch. Do you want them to add your product to their list of options? Do you want them to buy whatever you are selling immediately? If you do not expect them to buy your product immediately, how soon do you expect them to buy it? It does not matter if your customers do not want to do whatever it is you expect of them. What matters is that they know exactly why you are delivering your presentation.

Solution: Be confident and clear about your intentions to your clients. Let them know that you understand what their problems are and convince them how your product is right for them.

5. Focusing too much on the price.

Every single client who says the price is non-negotiable is actually willing to pay more for the right product. As a sales person, it is easy to get into endless negotiations with a client which budget seemsingly will not allow for a single dollar above the price they are quoting. Do not fall into this trap.

Solution: Make the resolution of your client's problems the focus of your presentation. Let the benefits of your offer speak for themselves. Your product should be the best option, not the cheapest one.

6. Violating the crucial 'always be closing' rule.

The objective of any sales presentation should be to make the sale as quickly as possible and then move on to the next one. You should not expect to spend several hours every single time you present to a client. In most cases, if you've impressed your clients enough, talking more can ruin your chances of getting the sale.

Solution: Break down the content of your presentation into several stages. Each of the stages should complement the information presented by the previous one. At the end of each stage, ask for the close. If your clients say they do not have enough information to make a decision yet, move to the next stage and repeat the process.

7. Waiting to end the end of the presentation to talk about your price.

Traditional sales wisdom states that you should build value in the eyes of your customers before you reveal your price to them. This may be true, but a lot of sales people misunderstand 'building value' as waiting to end the end of the presentation. If you do not reveal your price to your clients early on in the presentation, you will inevitably be asked about the price during the middle of it. Even if your clients are very impressed by your presentation, they will spend most of it wondering how much it will cost them.

Solution: Let your customers know the price of your product right off the bat. This way, they can weigh the benefits of the product against the cost they will be paying. If they have any concerns about the price, you can deal with them during your presentation by proving your product is worth it. Letting your customers know the price immediately also projects an air of confidence and builds trust.

8. Target the people whose opinion will influence the decision maker.

Often, salesmen will make the mistake of tailoring a presentation entirely to the needs of the people who will sign on the dotted line. In reality, there are multiple people who influence the final outcome of a purchasing decision. Do not ignore them during your presentation.

Solution: Find out who the influencers are and what they need, and make sure your presentation talks about solving their problems.

9. Offering free trials to finalize a sale.

In certain cases, offering your clients a free trial of service or product may work. For example, if you have a web-based software, you can offer your customers free trials. But usually, free trials do not work because they are hard to manage and require a lot of follow-up. Plus, by offering a free trial, you are essentially giving your customer the option to not pay for your service after the trial period is over. If they do not choose to sign on, you will lose money. If you do not have multiple sales that have been closed because of free trial offers, it can create tremendous financial stress for your company.

Solution: Close the deal the traditional way, or walk away from the client.

In summary, if you are not seeing enough sales recently, it might be time to go back to the drawing board. Fixing any of the mistakes on this list that apply to you will make a huge impact on the effectiveness of your sales funnel. If necessary, invest in training programs to improve the skill-set of your sales staff.

Go For it Sasha Cohen in 2010

Figure skating is one of the most difficult and demanding sport in the world. However, skaters have been landing triple jumps since before World War II. Great figure skating, does not mean one must dig their toe pick into the ice and rotate or revolve as much as they possibly can. I mourn the passing of the glorious spiral. No more do we see the absolutely fluid spirals; courtesy of Michelle Kwan, complete with the most radiant smile that has us totally convinced that she was absolutely loving every minute spent on ice. I don’t care how high you can leap or rotate; one fact remains, no youngsters have seized the moment since Kwan. Those who could fill the void of fluid, entertaining and artistic skating are gone. Sasha can restore pride in the United States team.

It is refreshing to find skaters like Sasha Cohen who can inject life experience into their choreography. I love to watch Sasha. Her presence on the ice is one of pristine and incredible beauty. The leg extension, the spiral, the elasticity, the fluidity she displays as she glides across the ice are just marvelous.

It is such a pleasure to watch Sasha skates, and I am very glad she wants to come back, and she has as much chance as any of the skaters to get the crown. Under the Code of Points scoring system, Cohen often scored more points in the free skate than other ladies scored during the entire competition. She skates with grace and elegance. Her presentation and connecting moves are just outstanding, including her gorgeous Charlotte. She just has to have two good clean skates. While Yu Na Kim may appear invincible, don’t get me wrong, I find her to be one of the best skaters yet; however, all of the expectations may rattle her, or anyone for that matter. As a result, she may have a not so stellar skate, and “we” may in turn be surprise yet again. Someone unknown, from out of no where may come and snatch the spotlight. It has happened in our own backyard. Remember Mirai Nagasu? when all of the attention were on Zhang and Meissner, and Nagasu took the crown. She became the “future of figure skating.” Then again Yu Na never disappoints. She is the best skater in the world right now, maybe the best ever. She has jumps, flexibility, artistry, flair, fluidity and most important: consistency. If she skates her best which we know she will, there is no doubt that the crown will be hers.

This season Asada has attempted two triple Axels, in her Long Program and let’s not disregard the judges’ imposition on those skaters. Skaters are being penalized for incomplete rotations, or wrong edges entry. Sasha, may just finally have that stellar competition that she’s been missing from her amateur career days. She has a very hard road ahead of her however. I’ve always felt that Miss Cohen is one of the greatest talents to ever glide on the ice; but she lacks consistency and the focus, a huge hindrance in any sport, even more in figure skating.

The problem with Sasha is her lack of consistency in her jumps; as a result, it may lower her base value to a point where winning can almost be impossible. Sasha has it all: grace, elegance, and she knows how to interpret her music. Her focus should be on securing her jumps. She’ll have to work hard on clean entries and clean landing of her jumps. Her incredible flexibility, artistry and flair will take care of the rest. She will be unbeatable then.

I have always been a huge fan of Sasha’s and am very excited to see her come back. She will bring a lot of excitement to skating nationally and internationally. If only there were three spots available, it would be a marvel to see Meissner, Cohen, and Flatt in action. There is a distinctive charm to their skating. Those three have what audiences enjoy.

Sasha had not been very consistent with her jumps during the height of her competitive career. Strong spirals and great flexibility are great assets; however, they are not enough. The International Figure Skating Union (ISU) Technical Panels regularly awards Level 4 designation to many ladies’ spiral sequences at any given high level competition such as Worlds for instance. The value of Spin Sequence, even at Level 4 is only worth 2.9, the difference will come down to the Grade of Execution (GOE) which may be minimal. Flexibility may earn some extra points for Sasha, but mental toughness is what will lead to the gold medal. In the Ladies’ event, the difference between victory and crushed dreams is often how one handles the pressure of this Olympic main event. Sasha cannot let nerves get the best of her. Her spins and spirals might be high levels. However, the jumps have to be clean.

The women long program at the Olympic Games may be the hardest moment to deal with. Sasha is a great skater, but she has not been a clean skater. She had either a clean short program and a bad long program or a bad short program and a good long program. Before she considers returning to competitive figure skating, Sasha would need concentrate on two clean programs. Sasha has good spins and great flexibility however she is limited (as far as landing the jumps)when compared against a Triple Axel or a consistent and very well executed Triple Flip-Triple Toe combos that her competitors will be doing. Her Charlotte is an absolutely gorgeous move. Our team would be solid with Cohen Meissner, and/or Flatt, or perhaps Wagner and/or Hacker on the scene.

Sasha is the most artistic skater in the world today. She brings a quality to skating that most skaters sought after. Cohen would bring considerable experience to the United States team. She has unparalleled spins, spirals and lovely positions. Cohen is a mesmerizing skater who charms crowds. She has shown that she can make up her athletic shortcomings with wowing artistry; Cohen knows very well what is expected of her – and what she expects of herself.

Every Child Is Special: A Movie Review

Every Child Is Special is probably my first Bollywood movie. (I do not count Slumdog Millionaire because I have watched it only in parts and have not even gotten to the ending, haha.) Anyway, Every Child Is Special is a Hindi drama film released in 2007 (Taare Zameen Par, translation: Stars On Earth) produced and directed by Aamir Khan. It tells about a boy, Ishaan Awasthi, who was always getting in trouble at school for being so misbehaving and out of focus from his lessons. Too often, he would be caught by his teacher daydreaming and getting low grades. Because of this, his father sent him to boarding school, all alone and homesick with the hope of disciplining him. But the academic status of Ishaan did still not improve. Instead, he became withdrawn and lonely, far from the Ishaan who was active and fun-loving. Then came a new art teacher who would just change the way Ishaan would act towards school and learn to appreciate himself even more.

How can I not love this movie? Darsheel Safary is perfect for the role of Ishaan Awasthi. Safary, with his innocent eyes and face, made me laugh with his funny antics and at the same time rend my heart as he goes through the agony of enduring boarding school alone and away from his parents. From start to finish, the movie gripped my attention, and the musical portions added to my fascination. I cannot speak about the technical aspects of film-making as I am not knowledgeable of such, but for an easy to please movie fan like me, Every Child Is Special is one heart-touching movie.

Every Child Is Special is an eye opener as to the worth and significance of every child. The story deals with an issue that is as real as it is unrecognized – dyslexia. I first knew about dyslexia in the book, Pearl Harbor by Randall Wallace, but the movie has increased my education on this kind of ailment.

Every Child Is Special is a movie that can tug the heartstrings and at the same time bring hope that having dyslexia is not a desperate situation. Family support, patience, and love are central themes in this story, plus the primary focus on painting and art. The theory on multiple intelligences in education plays a major role in this movie and can be very informative to teachers and parents alike.

I really love this movie and I highly recommend this to everyone. My sister has also been nagging me to watch The Three Idiots. Maybe, tonight.

5 stars.

How to Organize a Theme Party – 7 Steps You Must Know

Organizing a theme party is all about fun laughter and good times. With flair and imagination let your inner child express itself and dress your self up in your favorite character costume.

To guarantee the success of your next theme party, there are 7 steps you absolutely must know. These 7 steps reveal the secrets to ensuring that every party you ever throw being an amazing success. It’s all about planning and foresight.

Step 1 – Choose the date and time of your party.

Make a decision on when you would like to have your theme party. Check in with your friends to see if they are available before sending out the invitations. That way you can be sure that there will be no disappointment if your friends don’t arrive on the night.

A must know tip: Keep in mind that long weekends may not be the ideal time to plan your theme party. Quite often people go away and you may find it difficult to fill your guest list with all of your special friends.

Step 2 – Set the Stage, the Theme has Begun

When choosing a theme for your theme party, it is a good idea to consider the season and time of the year. This may be a great way to decide what theme you would like to have. A flimsy costume on a cold winters evening would not be compatible with the season and weather.

A must know tip: Make sure that your theme party is organized to show case costumes that are compatible with the weather at the time of year you are holding your party. Keeping the theme party and costumes consistent will ensure everyone is comfortable and contribute greatly towards a successful event.

Step 3 – Source Your Venue

A venue that is central and easily accessible to all those on your guest list is usually the best approach to take when considering what venue you will use for your theme party. Consider those guests that may be from out of town and look at available accommodation and prices within a reasonable distance to the venue you are considering before making a final decision and placing a deposit to secure the venue.

A must know tip: when selecting your venue look at it to see whether or not you can use the venue as the ideal theme for your party. E.g. Are you considering a boat for your venue? Then perhaps an ideal theme party would be “Pirates and Wenches”.

Step 4 – Picking a Costume and Creating Your Character

Now the real fun begins! It’s time to pick your costume and plan your entrance!! When posting out invitations to your theme party, include some suggestions as to where they can get their costume from. Costumes can be purchased either new or 2nd hand or hired from any fancy dress store.

If you decide you would like to make your costume, many haberdashery stores give away old pattern books. This is a gold mine of information on ideas of what costume to pick and make your self.

Perhaps you would prefer to hire your costume. Many fancy dress stores can advise you on styles, colors, and a theme for your party, music and lots more. Go online and check out the various costumes available.

A Must Know Tip: To save time and energy check out some of the many online party or costume hire sites, as a starting point to help you decide on your theme party and what costume you would like to wear. There are some online stores that will assist you with online ordering of costumes and accessories which is a huge bonus.

Step 5 – Selecting and Planning Your Menu

The date has been chosen, the venue has been booked, the theme decided and the costume selected. The party is heating up and it’s all systems go. Music, dancing, goods times and laughter are on their way!! So what are you going to eat?

Consider the possibilities when it comes to providing food for your guests. Will you use caterers, cook yourself or ask your guests to all bring a plate along.

Keeping the food within a theme brings the whole party theme together, e.g. if you are holding a western party, why not have corn on the cob, chili con carne, savory baked beans.

A Must Know Tip: If you have decided to ask your guests to bring a plate, plan your menu prior to sending out the invitations and request the dish on their invitation. This will avoid confusion and doubling up of dishes. If you have decided to do all the cooking yourself, consider which recipes can be cooked in advance and stored in the freezer.

Step 6 – Decoration and Props Give You Theme and Character

No theme party is complete without decorations and props. The decoration and props can be guaranteed to send your party off with a bang. They will create an atmosphere that will relax your guests and ease them into their character for the night.

Many party hire stores offer balloons, fog machines, table/chairs, lighting, heaters, cocktail machines and props so you are sure to find exactly what it is you are looking for.

Short on time -order online

A Must Know Tip: Do it yourself balloon kits – gas bottles can be hired from your local party hire store

Step 7 – Select Your Music and Get the Party Rocking

Music can be the make or break of any party, so it’s important to take the time to pre-select any music. When planning a theme party consistency through out all areas of your party is vital. This includes the music and equipment so make sure the music fits the theme. As mentioned above if your party is western, then obviously country and western music will be consistent with the theme of your party.

A Must Know Tip: 2nd hand music stores are a great place to pick up music if you are not using a duke box or some other form of hire music equipment. Check in with your guests to see if they have any music that will fit the theme. Ask them to bring a copy if they can. Borrowing from the local library is also a cost effective alternative to buying music just for your theme party.

Remember when planning your next theme party to keep the theme consistent right from the venue, props and decorations leading into the costumes and characters and onto the food and music.

If you follow these 7 must know steps you can be rest assured that your next theme party will be a night filled with memories of goods times laughter and dancing.

Rohan Online Half Elf Ranger Class Build (PvP-PvE)

Half Elf Ranger Class Build (PvP/PvE)

The half elf ranger build in my opinion is the king of solo. This build is designed to bombard enemies from an insane attack range. The Ranger has a decent critical rate and some great rooting spells.

Stat Build: Your leveling points should be distributed as 1VIT – 3 DEX or This ranger build has no psyche so you are gonna rely on pots for your mana so you must be careful not to deplete it too soon.. You will have some decent HP with 130 points of VIT just in case someone might be lucky enough to get close to you.

This build has a large distribution of DEX to boost your ranged attack quite a bit. You will have great damage and a long range to do it in.

PvE: The easiest class to solo with by far and one of the fasted classes to level also. Most mobs won’t even get close enough to you to do any damage since you have long attack range and have the ability to slow your target mobility speed. Only ranged mobs will have that chance to get a few shots off before they hit the ground bleeding. You only really need to cast one skill per mob before they die since you will be doing some nasty normal ranged attack damage. You will also have an easy time when in a high level mob grind party. You don’t really have to move around much just let tankers tank and do a little pulling here and there.

PvP: The ranger class i one of the few classes that do well against ranged and melee based classes in PvP. You take down magic type classes pretty easily and melee classes can be stunned and slowed down to a crawl before they can get to you. You can do some powerful critical damage at a long range using Critical Shot. The ranger has some great PvP skill at their disposal including Luxury Shot and Premium Shot leaving enemies with missed parts of their HP bar lol. A nice spell to initiate your PvP sequence is Speed Wind which boosts your attack speed to an insane rate that lasts 10 seconds. When a melee class finally does get to you, hit them with Brandish Kick which has a 70% chance to stun target for 9 seconds. You can kite away from enemies easily since you have increased mobility skills.

Conclusion: This ranger build is balanced and you will have extended use of your skills and will be able to solo and pvp well. You don’t have a whole lot of mana so be careful. Remember that range is your advantage, don’t let melee get to close or they will rip you up 🙂
